The hamstring is formed by three muscles that run down the back of the thigh, and it plays an important role in walking and running by pulling the leg backward and propelling the body forward. The hamstring also helps bend the knees. Because they are used so much, hamstring injuries are relatively common among athletes and others who are physically active. How Do Hamstrings Get Injured: Hamstring injuries usually occur when the muscles get stretched too far. This happens when we run or sprint too fast or make abrupt twisting motions. Some examples of activities that can trigger a hamstring injury include:

  • Grade Three: This is a severe grade injury characterized by a complete tearing of the tissue.

How Physical Therapy Treats Hamstring Injuries: It is very important to treat a hamstring injury properly; otherwise, there is a strong likelihood that the injury will reoccur in the future. The therapist begins with a full evaluation of your symptoms to determine the severity of the injury. Next, a treatment plan is developed, which may incorporate the use of ice, heat, and a series of targeted stretches and exercises.

As the hamstring muscles strengthen, additional stretches and exercises are added to enhance the recovery process. To ensure a timely recovery, it is essential to do your stretches and exercises daily (as prescribed), and to keep up with your therapy appointments.
